Pro-AdBlock WordPress Plugin

Advertising displayed on webpages can be a security risk. Currently, the advertising consists of embedded third party content. These contents are not under the website's owner editorial control and add a repeatedly criminally exploited attack vector to the website. An adblocker protects a user's surfing. This plugin supports the usage of advertisement blockers and shows a warning message to users that have no adblocker enabled.

Why Pro-AdBlock?

Because of the never-ending discussion on the sense or nonsense of adblockers, Pro-AdBlock was developed: a WordPress plug-in that web site owners can install to warn their readers who do not have an Adblocker installed. It arose from a request from the blogger daMax and the subsequent discussion. So we got to work.

Although we strongly support the use of adblockers, we do not generally have anything against advertising or advertisers. If someone wants to earn money with advertising, he should do it. Unfortunately, the current nature of online advertising endangers the security and privacy of users. Two dangers lurk on the web:

1. Malware

Malvertising (malicious advertising) attempts to deliver malicious software via infected advertisements to the computers of website visitors. This can not only happen on dubious websites, as many believe. The main source of distribution are news and entertainment websites. Criminals try to infiltrate advertising agencies in order to send malicious scripts with traditional banners.

Thorsten Schröder from CCC writes:

An ad network, which is usually used as a service provider for online portals, brings with it a danger: malicious software. It arbitrarily endangers unsuspecting users who visit any web page - and it does not matter if it's a well-known, legitimate news site or a web server for swapping porn images: in case of doubt both will be supplied with ads and malware by the same ad network. This concerns us all, even if it currently looks, as if only a marginal group takes care of the problem.

In the last quarter of 2014 alone, users were lured to malware advertising 3 million times a day. And the trend is still increasing.

2. Tracking

Almost every page view is saved by advertisers. The surfing behavior of the user is spied on in order to then show the user personally tailored advertising from this information:

The recording and examination of user behavior on the Internet is a common practice on many websites. Users often do not know that tracking services are used at all. The possibilities of the examination are generally underestimated.

Often the obtained data are lucratively resold to third parties.

Whereby the possibly larger problem can be seen in point 2. The risk of your computer being infected with malware is "relatively low", whereas tracking is practically always the case.

An adblocker protects during the internet surfing. To make Internet users aware of the potential dangers of online advertising, Pro-AdBlock was invented. It's ready for download from the WordPress plugin directory as well as on GitHub. Pro-AdBlock has options for freely selectable text and other customizable options. It also supports multilingualism.

Many thanks to daMax for the suggestions and LUCiDdev for the development of a Joomla variant of Pro-AdBlock.
